How to Use an Online Notepad for Notes, Code and Everyday Writing

Learn to organise notes, format writing, edit source files, search long documents and protect your work with browser backups in SwiftVecto Advanced Notepad.

By SwiftVecto Published

An online notepad is useful for much more than quickly pasting a few lines of text. You might be writing meeting notes, drafting an email, keeping a checklist, reviewing a configuration file or searching a long document for one important phrase. The challenge is finding an editor that is easy to use and gives you control over your work.

SwiftVecto Advanced Notepad combines visual note-taking, a source-code editor and a distraction-reduced writing mode in one browser workspace. This guide explains how to use those features, how local autosave works and how to avoid losing important notes.

Try it in your browser

Open SwiftVecto Advanced Notepad to follow the steps in this guide.

1. Choose the right editing mode

Advanced Notepad offers three ways to work with a document.

Notes: everyday writing with visual formatting

Choose Notes for meeting summaries, personal notes, plans, checklists and drafts. The visual editor lets you apply formatting directly: selected words appear bold or italic, headings look like headings, and checkboxes can be checked without writing Markdown symbols.

Select text before using Bold or Italic. Click the same formatting control again to remove that formatting. For links, select the words you want to make clickable, choose the link control and enter the destination URL.

Code: editing supported source files

Choose Code when working with plain-text configuration files, scripts or code snippets. Code mode offers syntax highlighting, line numbers, search and replace, indentation controls, code folding and language selection. If you import a supported source file, the editor can identify its language from the extension.

For JSON files, use the validation control to check syntax and locate errors; use formatting to indent a valid JSON document. Code mode edits code; it does not run programs or scripts.

Focus: fewer distractions

Choose Focus when you want to concentrate on writing. It uses the visual writing editor in a calmer, centred layout. The note remains in the same local library, so you do not need to copy it between modes.

2. Create, find and organise notes

Start a new note from the workspace or choose an existing note in the sidebar. Give each note a recognisable title. Instead of creating separate documents for every minor change, use the library controls to organise work:

  • Search: Find notes by title, content or tag.
  • Tags: Add descriptive labels such as meeting, project or ideas, then filter the list.
  • Pin: Keep frequently used notes readily accessible.
  • Duplicate: Make a working copy before trying a substantial rewrite.
  • Trash: Recover notes deleted accidentally, unless you have permanently deleted them.

A useful naming pattern is Project – Topic – Date, but keep titles short enough to recognise at a glance.

3. Format a note without learning Markdown

In Notes mode you can create headings, bold and italic text, lists, quotes, hyperlinks and interactive checklists. The visible result is the formatted document, not raw symbols such as **bold** or - [ ].

Try making a small meeting note:

Meeting: Website release review

Decisions

  • Publish the updated guide.
  • Test backup and restore.

Actions

  • ☐ Confirm the release checklist.
  • ☐ Save a JSON library backup.

The visual editor also supports familiar formatting shortcuts such as Ctrl+B for bold and Ctrl+I for italic on Windows; use Cmd equivalents where supported on macOS. The workspace's shortcut help displays the currently supported key combinations.

4. Search a long document efficiently

For long source or text documents, use Code mode's Find control (Ctrl+F on Windows). Search for a word or phrase, then use Next and Previous to move between matches. The Code editor scrolls within its own viewport, so search controls remain accessible even when a document contains thousands of lines.

When searching code, more specific phrases often reduce false matches. For example, searching "status": "failed" is usually more useful than searching failed alone. Use case-sensitive or regular-expression options when the task calls for them.

To locate an entirely different note, use the sidebar note search instead. It searches your library, not merely the document currently open.

5. Import and download text files

Advanced Notepad accepts supported UTF-8 text and source-code formats up to 5 MB per file. An import is not a way to open Word documents, PDFs or arbitrary binary files. Unsupported or oversized files are rejected, and the existing notes are left unchanged.

After editing, use Download to save an individual note or source file. In Code mode, the filename and language information help preserve an appropriate source-file extension.

Be aware that source-file imports are text-based: the editor does not promise to retain an original byte-order mark or newline convention. If those byte-level details matter to a deployment or build pipeline, verify the downloaded file before using it.

6. Understand what autosave does—and does not do

Your notes are saved in the current browser's IndexedDB storage. This means you can return to your notes in the same browser profile while its site data remains intact. It does not mean your notes automatically appear on another laptop, phone, browser or account.

Ordinary editing and autosave happen in the browser rather than requiring your document text to be processed on SwiftVecto's server. That statement applies to editing content; other page services may still use network requests. Likewise, browser-based storage is not a guarantee that the entire application will function offline.

Watch for save or storage warnings. Before closing a tab immediately after a substantial edit, check that your content has been saved.

7. Back up your entire notes library

A downloaded note is not a full-library backup. If you have several notes, tags, formatted content and items in Trash, use the dedicated Backup feature to download the JSON library file.

A simple backup routine:

  1. Use Backup to download the complete library as JSON.
  2. Confirm that the file downloaded and is not empty.
  3. Keep it somewhere outside the browser, such as a secured backup folder.
  4. Make another backup before clearing browser data, replacing a device or using the Restore Replace option.
  5. Periodically test restoration using a disposable browser profile or test library rather than risking your main notes.

When restoring, Merge adds records into the current library, while Replace substitutes the current library with the backup's contents. Review the confirmation carefully before replacing anything.

If you clear site data without an external backup, your locally stored notes may be unrecoverable.

8. Keep rich formatting safe when working with code

A richly formatted note is not the same kind of document as a source file. Advanced Notepad keeps a plain-text representation for compatibility, but preserves rich formatting separately. If you open a formatted note in Code mode, the editor protects it against accidental conversion until you deliberately choose to work with plain text.

Use Notes/Focus for visual formatting and Code for source files. If you must convert a rich note into a plain-text file, make a backup first.

9. Everyday troubleshooting

My notes are missing in another browser. Local browser storage is not automatically synchronised. Export a JSON backup from the original browser and restore it on the other device.

My file won't import. Confirm it is a supported UTF-8 text/source file and is no larger than 5 MB. A PDF or Word file is not equivalent to a text file.

I can't find a search result. Check whether you are using the sidebar's library search or Code mode's current-document Find control.

My JSON will not format. First run validation. A trailing comma, missing quote or unmatched bracket can make JSON invalid.

I lost notes after clearing browser data. Restoration requires an external copy such as a previously downloaded JSON library backup; browser autosave alone cannot recover data that has been deleted.

10. Which mode should you use?

Task Best mode
Draft a meeting summary or personal note Notes
Create a checklist with clickable items Notes
Edit PHP, JavaScript, JSON or another supported text file Code
Search through thousands of lines of source text Code
Write without a crowded interface Focus
Move all notes to another browser Backup / Restore

Frequently asked questions

Is Advanced Notepad an online code execution tool?

No. Code mode is a browser-based editor with syntax highlighting and navigation features. It does not execute code.

Is it safe to rely only on browser autosave?

No. Autosave is useful for continuity, but clearing site data, changing browsers, storage restrictions or device problems can remove local notes. Use JSON backups for important work.

Can I recover deleted notes?

Notes moved to Trash can be restored unless permanently deleted. A separately saved backup may provide another recovery path.

Can I use the notepad without creating an account?

Yes. The local note-taking workflow does not require an account.

Does it support Markdown files?

Markdown is a supported text-based format for relevant import/export workflows, but Notes mode provides visual formatting rather than requiring users to enter Markdown syntax themselves.
